CDC relaxes summer guidelines for the fully vaccinated

Typically, communications from the national health authority will have little impact on your barbecue plans. However, this is not a typical summer. Today the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued new guidelines on mask use for fully vaccinated Americans. And if you enjoy barbecuing in the garden and eating at outdoor restaurants, that's good news.

New CDC guidelines on the use of masks for fully vaccinated individuals

"There are many situations in which fully vaccinated people do not need to wear a mask, especially when they are outdoors," says CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky. According to the CDC's new guidelines, if you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, you don't need a mask for walking, running, hiking and biking. And that applies regardless of whether you are traveling alone or with members of your household. The new guidelines also state that you can dine in restaurants with outdoor seating without a mask. Additionally, you may need to remove the rust from your small talk, as the CDC says you don't need to wear a mask to small outdoor gatherings, regardless of whether you are around with vaccinated or unvaccinated people.

"Outdoor activities without a mask are generally safe for people who have been vaccinated," says Walensky. For those who have not received the vaccine, the CDC recommends wearing a mask at gatherings and restaurants.

The CDC says that during larger outdoor events like concerts and sporting events, people who have their vaccines should still wear a mask. In addition, they encourage the use of masks in indoor spaces such as museums and cinemas. The CDC does not expect these recommendations to change anytime soon.

"We will continue to recommend this until a comprehensive vaccination is achieved," says Walensky.

Currently, 43 percent of eligible adults have at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 29 percent have all of their doses. President Biden said the latest updates from the CDC should encourage 57 percent of American adults who have not yet received a vaccine.

For those "especially when you're younger or think you don't need it," says Biden, "this is another great reason to get the vaccine."

This is also a great reason to clean your grill.
