Ultimate list of healthy travel snacks for kids

When you're on the go, snacks are a must! Before you set off, check out our healthy travel snacks for kids. With some of these healthy, portable options, you will definitely save Cheetos cheese stains on the seats!

Travel snack ideas

  • fruit: It is best to bring fruit that is not particularly juicy and tender. Our favorite options are: apple slices, sweetness, grapes, blueberries, fruit press bags, dried apricots, apples or pears, freeze-dried fruits.
  • Trail mix: Get something in the store or make it yourself with dried berries, nuts and seeds. Avoid mixing with pieces of chocolate, as these could melt in a roasted car. We like to throw in mini M & Ms because they don't usually melt.
  • Whole grain crackers: Sometimes your children need carbohydrates so that their stomach immediately feels full so that they can get to the nearest town for lunch. Whole grain crackers are a great, healthy snack that you can use to collect a little more miles.
  • vegetables: Crunchy, cold and filling – our favorite road trip vegetables are: carrot sticks, celery sticks, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and peas.
  • Fruit leather: Remember that not all fruit leathers are the same. Make sure that your fruit snacks do not contain sweeteners or artificial colors. That being said, there are several brands on the market that are sweetened and colored with fruit juice and are relatively dirt-free.
  • Whole grain muesli: Muesli is a great snack that does not cause chaos when served dry. Pack individual servings of cereals that don't contain much sugar so your kids won't go crazy with all the sweeteners.
  • rice cake: Rice cakes are messy and come in different flavors if your kids don't just like them. I usually put peanut butter or almond butter on it so that my children get a little protein, but depending on their age and wild nature, this may not be feasible for your children in the car.
  • Pita chips: Pita chips are a great way to meet the craving for chips. They have also become so popular that you can find them in many grocery stores.
  • Jerky: Depending on the age of your children, a little protein is sometimes a good snack. An added bonus is that Jerky is high in protein, so your kids will feel full longer. You can find a variety of jerky these days, from buffalo jerky to turkey jerky.
  • Pretzels: These are super crispy and satisfying – and many varieties are whole grains.
  • Popcorn from the air: This is one of our favorite snacks in general, and for us, of course, it's a snack that we like to eat when we're on the go.
  • Cheese sticks: Add a little protein and calcium – we love combining cheese with fruits and vegetables. Apples + cheese, celery + cheese, even cucumber + cheese. Mmmmmm.
  • Mini muffins: We make a batch in advance and freeze it. Then add them to our snack supply and after about an hour they thaw and are ready to eat!
  • Hummus and guac packs: Many stores sell packaged hummus and guac that make it convenient and easy to immerse all things!
  • Granola bar: This is a quick carbohydrate boost for kids and is easy to throw in.
  • Energy bites: If you have time to make a batch before your trip, kids will love this small sized snack. We have tons of recipes on site for this.

Travel container

Instead of bringing all the packaging – boxes, bags, plastic – with us, we like to empty the snacks we bring with us in containers to reduce the amount of garbage that we have floating around in the car!

Car cooler organizer

It is very convenient to pack a container with all the snacks and then distribute it as needed. We like to use ours in this insulated car cooler. It is just the right size for everything, is soft and can therefore squeeze in confined spaces. It's insulated to keep things cold.

We have two different favorite individual containers that we like to pack snacks into. They are the Easy Lunchbox brand. They are inexpensive, hold very well, are easy to open and close, keep food tight and hold the perfect amount of food!

If you have some food options that are a little bulky, this container is a great option. It has 2 smaller compartments and a larger compartment. You can fit things like bagel, sandwich, wrap, etc.
